7 Natural Remedies for Uterine Fibroids

Fibroids are benign tumors that grow on the uterus. They can be asymptomatic or contribute to debilitating symptoms for some women. Associated symptoms can include heavy menstrual bleeding, longer or more unpredictable menstrual bleeding, abdominal bloating, pelvic pain, pain during sexual intercourse, constipation, difficulties urinating, back pain and difficulties with pregnancy.

Fibroids are stimulated to grow by excess estrogen exposure so as a woman approaches menopause symptoms will improve with the atrophy of these tumors. Before then, fibroids can be treated with medications and surgical procedures based on symptoms and the desire for pregnancy.

Some women may choose to take a natural approach to the management of fibroids. Be sure to speak with your healthcare provider prior to considering any of the following:

1.

Increase the intake of foods high in antioxidants such as blackberries and blueberries, spinach, kale, beans, green tea.

2.

Increase the intake of vitamins A, C, D, E with nutrient rich foods like broccoli, spinach, carrots, oranges which can also be a good source of dietary fiber

3.

Avoid foods that are super-processed and high in saturated fats and refined sugars that may encourage tumor growth

4.

Decrease consumption of red meat and dairy products

5.

Reduce caffeine intake

6.

Limit alcohol consumption

7.

Consider incorporating herbs and spices such as dandelion root, turmeric, ginger which are known to inhibit growth of tumors

Other holistic considerations to include:

- Use of acupuncture which may be helpful for symptomatic relief though research is inconclusive

- Focus on minimizing stress which can be harmful to your health. Allow self care with warm baths, regular exercise such as walking or yoga, and proper sleep
